Research Support (past 5 years)

  • NIH-NIDCD/T32 DC000013, Jesteadt (PD), 07/01/10 - 06/30/15

    • Title: Research in Human Communication and its Disorders

    • Description: This is a grant that provides institutional training support for three postdoctoral fellows.

    • Role: Postdoctoral Fellow (3/1/2010-3/4/2013), Project: Language development of young children with hearing loss

  • NIH-NIDCD/R01 DC009560, Co-PI: Moeller & Tomblin, 8/1/2013-7/30/2018

    • Title: Outcomes of School-Age Children who are Hard of Hearing

    • Description: The project is obtaining critical information regarding the language and academic outcomes of a large group of children with mild to severe hearing loss in the school years. This is an extension of an earlier study that examined the outcomes of the same group of subjects during their preschool years.

    • Role: Co-Investigator

  • NIH-NIDCD/R03 DC012647, PI: Ambrose, 3/4/2013-2/28/2016

    • Title:Contributions of Gesture to the Linguistic Outcomes of Children with Hearing Loss

    • Description: The aims of this longitudinal study are to 1) determine whether the gestural abilities of toddlers with hearing loss predict unique variance in their later spoken language abilities, 2) ascertain the effects of maternal gesture use on the linguistic outcomes of toddlers with hearing loss, and 3) establish the influence of maternal responsiveness to gesture on the spoken language outcomes of toddlers with hearing loss.

    • Role: Principle Investigator

  • NIH-NIGMS/P20 GM109023-03, PI: Jesteadt, 05/15/14-03/31/19

    • Title: Center for Perception and Communication in Children (CPCC)

    • Description: The goal of the CPCC, a COBRE at the Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, is to expand the range of the current research program by providing a unique environment for the development of junior faculty who have an interest in understanding the consequences of childhood hearing loss for speech and language perception and processing, and ultimately describing performance of children with hearing loss in the real world.

    • Title of Project V: Efficacy of an Early Intervention Addressing Needs of Children with Hearing Loss.

    • Description of Project V: The long-term objective of this program of research is to develop evidence-based intervention techniques that can be utilized by practitioners to reduce the risk presented by hearing loss to children’s language development. The proposed project will develop and assess the efficacy of a parent-implemented intervention to improve the access of children with hearing loss to quality linguistic input by optimizing parent-child interactions and, for children who utilize hearing aids, daily hearing aid use.

    • Role: Lead Investigator, Project V
